Did you know that some risk factors prevalent in LGBTQ+ communities are putting us at a higher risk of cancer than the general population? At ACON, we’ve launched CAN WE to help do something about this. Here’s our story.
Who we are?
CAN WE is a community-driven cancer awareness brand within the ACON family and at the heart of LGBTQ+ communities. Funded by the Cancer Institute NSW, we’re a small and dedicated team with a clear cause: changing the conversation on cancer in LGBTQ+ communities from out of sight to top of mind.
As a trusted platform, we share evidence-based information, cancer screening and support resources, and practical advice to help reduce cancer risk and keep our communities healthy. We also provide an Inclusion Toolkit for healthcare providers, giving services the tools and guidance they need to deliver safe, affirming, and inclusive care for LGBTQ+ people. Together, we bring the insights and ideas that make it easier for all of us to thrive.

Why we created CAN WE?
Australian and international research shows that LGBTQ+ communities face a higher risk of cancer than the general population. Studies highlight that, as a community, we smoke and drink more — and we participate less in cancer screening, particularly cervical screening, but also bowel, breast, and lung screening. Can we do something about this? Yes we can. And CAN WE is the community platform helping LGBTQ+ people take action, reduce cancer risk, and stay healthy.

CAN WE comes to life both online and in person. From trusted cancer information sources to social media posts, community events to pop-up screening activations, we’re here for every cancer conversation from ACON, for our LGBTQ+ communities.
Our pop-up LGBTQ+ cervical screening activations run year-round at NSW Pride events, making screening more accessible, inclusive, and visible for our communities. Follow us on Instagram to get updates on the next one.
