for carers, friends and supporters

Diagnosis is a life-changing word for someone you care about.

It can be hard to know how to support someone with cancer. In this section, we share practical ways to show up for people with cancer and their carer/s.

Some people with cancer might not want help or might be resistant to help.

For people providing care, it can be hard to ask for help.

Carers need caring for too. Caring isn’t one way, people with cancer also provide care and support to their partner/s.

As a carer it might feel hard to have your own emotions around your loved one’s cancer. Some carers might hide their feelings so they don’t burden the person they’re caring for. Carers need their own support (see: community support) and ways to allow their feelings to be out in the open without feeling guilty for taking up space. Some carers might be able to process their feelings during their loved one’s treatment, while for others it might happen months or even years afterwards. There is no right way to feel what you feel.

Burnout can happen after the initial adrenaline of caregiving wears off.
